La Nube, the El Paso Children’s Museum and Science Center, has become the centerpiece of the 2012 City of El Paso Quality of Life Bond, completing the Downtown Arts District. A first-of-its-kind public-private partnership between the City and the El Paso Community Foundation, the project is key to the Downtown revitalization. As Architect of Record, Exigo partnered with Snøhetta’s New York office from early design through construction. The 77,000 S.F., $50 million museum features four interactive levels with immersive exhibits for all ages. A highlight is the dramatic four-story climber, designed for exploration, risk-taking, and inclusive play.

The museum also includes a café, commercial kitchen, administrative and support spaces, and two outdoor exhibit terraces. Its surrounding urban landscape offers café seating, misting poles, and integrated play areas. Designed to serve regional youth and complement Juárez’s children’s museum, La Nube floats like a cloud above the desert—connecting people of all ages in a shared experience.

“The opening of La Nube is a culmination of years of planning and hard work from community leaders, taxpayers, donors, contractors and creatives. We are honored to contribute to such a significant project for our community. It’s heartwarming to finally see children enjoy the space designed to expand their educational opportunities while reflecting our distinct culture and climate.”

Eugenio ”Pacelli” Mesta, Exigo

“With the design of La Nube, we embraced the idea of making more than a background for the exhibits, but in creating an environment where the architecture, landscape, and exhibits enhance each other and become a memorable, holistic experience.”
